Thoughtful Giving (and Spending) During the Holidays

"It's the thought that counts."
It is a familiar adage for gift-giving, but how many of us fall into the holiday trap of "the perfect gift" – which often comes with a higher price and stress. Add the drama of "pre-Black Friday sales" and other buy-it-now enticements, and suddenly, it's not the most wonderful time of the year anymore.
A new Gallup Poll reports that Americans estimate they'll spend an average of $764 on Christmas gifts this year -- $50 more than the 2010 average. Many families will spend a lot more.
How can we become more thoughtful givers during the holiday season?
